Simply shake a small amount of the powder into a bucket or caddy before emptying the food waste into your composter to maintain a healthy, active bacterial population.
Within The Accelerator Powder formulation there are both mesophilic and thermophilic bacteria in a cereal base. This formula ensures a healthy population of safe bacteria that will keep your compost working efficiently. What is the function of bacteria? Quite simply, the bacteria accelerate the speed at which the waste material is disposed of. Note that these bacteria are found naturally in our soil - the Accelerator Powder augments the existing population.
There are a number of different types of bacteria in Accelerator Powder that produce the different types of enzymes required to cover the range of household food waste. The mesophiles initiate the process of breaking down waste when it first enters the composter. The high temperatures produced by the digestion process results in the death of many of these useful mesophiles. So, as temperatures increase, the thermophiles take over the decomposition, usually working towards the bottom, warmer part of pile.
These bacteria accelerate the decomposition process by producing enzymes, which break down the different components food waste and allow the bacteria to absorb the waste as food...and eventually convert it to CO2 and water. The four principal enzyme types that the micro-organisms in the Accelerator produce are:
